Chicago’s western suburbs offer a host of of family-friendly activities that provide a welcome respite from the week’s round of work and school. If you’re looking at homes this month, bring the family along and stop in at one of these fall events. From kid-friendly Halloween activities to treats and treasures on Naperville’s Riverwalk, you’ll see what we mean when we say we live and love local! 


Pumpkin Daze at Abbey Farms, Aurora, through October 31

Sprawled across 40 acres in Aurora, Abbey Farms Pumpkin Daze offers lots of fall-themed fun for both children and adults. Themed weekends coming up in October include County Farm Weekend on October 7 and 8 with pumpkin bowling contests, pie-eating contests and more. A Farm Olympic Weekend will rule the roost on October 14 and 15 with corn-husking races and potato-sack races. Trick or Treat Weekend is October 28 and 29. Guests are invited to wear their costumes and collect treats throughout the farm. Did we mention the two corn mazes? All events are kid-friendly.

Children’s Zoo & Fall Festival, Johansen Farms, Bolingbrook, through October 31

Spend the day with the family at Johansen Farms’ Children’s Zoo and Fall Festival. For one low price, you can enjoy a corn maze, petting zoo, huge pumpkin patch, hayrides, a bouncy castle and more. Located in Bolingbrook, Johansen Farms is open from 9 AM until 7 PM daily.

Halloween Hayday and Howl O’ Ween Dog Parade, Geneva, October 28

If there’s one thing we can’t resist, it’s dogs in costumes. On October 28 at 1:30 PM, Peck Farm Park in Geneva hosts a free Howl O’ Ween Dog Parade with awards for the funniest, scariest, and most creative costumes. The canine line-up starts at 1:15 PM. From 10 AM until 1 PM, children ages 14 and under can enjoy a Halloween Hayday at the Stephen D. Persinger Recreation Center. Activities include a Halloween egg hunt, science activities, hay rides, costume contest and more.

Kid-Friendly Halloween Events at Morton Arboretum, weekends in October, Lisle

The Morton Arboretum in Lisle is the site of numerous family-friendly fall events throughout October including the BOO Breakfast at 9 AM on October 29 in the Ginkgo Restaurant. Pre-registration is required for this character buffet breakfast that’s designed to get the Halloween weekend off to a celebratory start. The Trick or Trees event, located in the Children’s Garden, is where children can play games, make fall crafts, and decorate pumpkins from 11 AM until 4 PM on Columbus Day and weekends throughout October. The Scarecrow Trail is available for admirers to stroll through from 7 AM until sunset daily throughout October.

Halloween Happening, October 29, Naperville

Geared for kids ages 10 and under, the Halloween Happening runs from 1 PM until 4 PM at the Grand Pavillion in Naperville’s Riverwalk. This free event features games and activities taking place over four kid-appropriate themes: friendly Halloween monsters, fairytales and fantasy, King Arthur and his court, and “adventure alley.”

Scare-illon Concert, October 28, Naperville

On Saturday, October 28 from 7 PM until 8 PM, Millennium Carillon will turn into a “scare-illion” for a family-friendly, Halloween-themed concert. The Scare-illon Concert will feature seasonal, popular, and classical musical selections ringing out from Millennium Carillon, located near Rotary Hill on the Naperville Riverwalk. This free event is for all ages.
